  • 8 oz pasta (penne or rotini) Holds onto sauce beautifully; can use whole wheat or gluten-free.
  • 1 lb sausage Italian, chicken, turkey, or plant-based sausages can be used.
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce Choose your favorite brand or homemade.
  • 1 cup chicken broth Vegetable broth can be used for a vegetarian option.
  • ½ cup honey Maple syrup can be a substitute.
  • 1 medium onion (chopped) Sweet onions preferred for added nuance.
  • 1 medium bell pepper (chopped) Red or yellow bell peppers work well.
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced) Increase for more flavor if desired.
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential for enhancing flavor.
  • optional Parmesan cheese Sprinkle on top for added umami.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Heat a splash of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering.
  • Add chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing until soft and aromatic, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir in minced garlic and sauté for another minute.

Cooking

  • Add sliced sausage to the pot and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Stir in uncooked pasta, BBQ sauce, chicken broth, and honey until well combined.
  • Bring to a rolling boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until pasta is al dente.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan if desired.

Notes

Garnish with extra parsley or basil. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Can freeze portions for up to a month.
